{"id":1621,"date":"2014-07-08T11:00:44","date_gmt":"2014-07-08T11:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/?p=1621"},"modified":"2014-07-08T14:18:13","modified_gmt":"2014-07-08T14:18:13","slug":"pitproject-successful-test-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/?p=1621","title":{"rendered":"Pi In The Sky Project &#8211; Successful Test Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This was the third flight of the &#8220;Pi In The Sky&#8221; board, but the first flight of the new open-source software written specifically for it (previous flights used a modified version of my usual Pi tracker software). The new software is a single multi-threaded program (instead of a collection of separate programs) and is configured via a text file so that for most users no recompilation is needed.<\/p>\n<p>For this flight I used a foam polystyrene egg bought from HobbyCraft. The Pi and tracker board fit neatly inside one half:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0690.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1623 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0690-e1404813775746-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0690\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0690-e1404813775746-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0690-e1404813775746-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>whilst the camera, GPS antenna and battery pack fit inside the other. No other packing was needed and the 2 halves were glued together with UHU Por polystyrene adhesive. Here&#8217;s the result:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0689.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1622 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0689-e1404813899391-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0689\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0689-e1404813899391-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0689-e1404813899391-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The glue is strong, but just to make sure I put some tape around the egg to keep the halves together. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the resulting payload, as I start to inflate the balloon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0554.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1624 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0554-e1404814294144-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0554\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0554-e1404814294144-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0554-e1404814294144-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The launch was easy, and we watched for a while as the flight broke through the clouds and started to download some nice images, after which we set out to chase. \u00a0We were expecting the flight to land east of Ludlow,\u00a0and we initially stopped near Leominster till the balloon turned west, then nearer Tenbury Wells as we waited for the burst. \u00a0That happened at 31644 metres, nearly 2km above the calculated figure, and pretty good for a 500g balloon. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the full flight path:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1625\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"482\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1.jpg 482w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were about 3 miles away when it landed, which isn&#8217;t bad considering the narrow winding roads in the area. \u00a0Landing spot was 4.5 miles from the prediction which is also pretty good. \u00a0Once it landed we headed for the last position, and when about half a mile away we received a signal strong enough to decode. \u00a0We then had the final position which was near a farmhouse:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1626\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2-1024x734.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"640\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2-1024x734.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2-300x215.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.daveakerman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2.jpg 1027w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We parked up and spoke to a farm worker and then the farmer who was very helpful, allowing us to wander round trying to find the payload. \u00a0Initially we went to the wrong place, having transcribed the co-ordinates wrongly!
